What is Reiki
Reiki (pronounced RAY-key) is a universal art of natural healing, and is a gentle non-invasive energy technique which aids the body through deep structural relaxation, to release stress and tension. It also aids in balancing and harmonizing the body's energetic system and enhances the immune
system as well.
First developed in Japan, and based on the teachings of Mikao Usai, who practiced and taught healing techniques during the early 1900's, Reiki spread throughout Japan and then the world. Dr. Usai was most likely inspired by his early spiritual training, including the study of Buddhist healing arts. Reiki is not massage, hypnosis or a tool for diagnosing illness, but a technique that addresses both chronic and acute conditions, gently and powerfully promoting balance among all the body's systems and the regeneration process of body and mind. A treatment feels like warm gentle sunshine, which flows through you, surrounds and comforts you.
Reiki and Health
Many ancient cultures believed, and recent research strongly suggests that energy does extend throughout and beyond the physical body, and that disruptions or imbalances in it's flow correlate to physical, mental and emotional illnesses. Continual stress can block the body's natural ability to repair, regenerate, and protect itself from sickness. When our physical body is alive with Life Force Energy and freeflowing, we can more easily maintain health and a feeling of well-being.
Used by a rapidly growing number of hospitals all over the world, Reiki complements medical treatment, physicological counseling, and massage therapy. Reiki is also gentle enough to offer support and reduce the discomforts of pregnant women and can help ease the pain of childbirth. A number of hospitals have Reiki practitioners available to a range of patients, including those with cancer or recovering from surgery.
Recent Research
Studies of Reiki show significant reduction of pain following treatment. Patients also report increased feelings of relaxation and a sense of well-being. One study cited improvement in immune and nervous system function and increase mobility in patients with conditions such as multiple sclerosis, lupus and fibormyalgia.
